Prestige number plates to be auctioned for charity
Update 9/7/14: The number plates sold for $3,750!
One Queensland Maroons supporter now has the chance to show they are the ultimate fan, with a set of rare number plates to be auctioned on eBay.
Queenslanders Credit Union is auctioning a set of genuine Queensland plates that feature the word MAROON in white writing on a maroon background.
The Queensland-based credit union has owned the number plates for several years, but is now letting them go to raise funds for development agency CUFA’s Village Entrepreneur Program.
The credit union’s assistant marketing manager, Katie Preston, said profits from the sale would help villagers in the world’s poorest countries to lift their families out of poverty by starting a small sustainable business.
“It’s such a brilliant cause and something that I’m personally passionate about as I will be travelling to Cambodia with CUFA at the end of the year to see first-hand how the program is changing the lives of individuals, families and whole villages,” she said.
“By auctioning these number plates, we aim to raise enough money to sponsor some entrepreneurs in Cambodia, who I can help to set up their small businesses when I visit.”
Katie said she hoped the winning bidder would be either an avid Maroons fan who would proudly zip around town with the plates on their car, or perhaps a collector who would see the value in owning them.
“A similar set of number plates that said MAROONS sold for $15,000 at the Brisbane International Motor Show in 2007, so someone could be lucky enough to walk away with a bargain.”
The auction will start at 7pm on Sunday 29 June and finish just in time for Game 3 of the State of Origin on Wednesday 9 July.
