06 July – Counterfeit $50 notes alert

Description:
There is currently a substantial amount of very high quality, counterfeit fifty dollar notes in circulation throughout NSW, which have likely spread to other states.
Made of polymer, these notes are of an exceptional quality and almost impossible to identify without careful examination. They are being introduced into the cash stream mostly through fast food outlets, pubs, clubs – places with high cash turnovers. However, due to their quality they have been identified in financial institution branches and ATM replenishment canisters.
Abacus Fraud and Financial Crimes has liaised with the NSW Police fraud squad to obtain sample images and a forensic report of the notes (to view these images click on the link below). It details features that can be used to identify the counterfeit notes and what members should look for.
