Staff and members go MAD for charity!

Date: 19/11/2023

Description:

In celebration of International Credit Union Day, staff at Queenslanders held various MAD fundraisers in October.

By MAD we mean Make A Difference. The aim was to raise money for CUFA, who support people in developing countries to lift their families out of poverty.

Staff came to work dressed in their maddest outfits for a gold coin donation, held bake sales and sold clay pigs that had been crafted by villagers in Cambodia. We also accepted donations in our branches and it was pleasing to see the generosity of members in supporting this cause.

Our efforts totalled $1,672.60, which CUFA said was the most raised by any mutual in Australia!

In fact, we raised enough money to sponsor a woman from the Lanamona Credit Union in Timor Leste to participate in the CUFA Village Entrepreneur Program.

Elsa Dos Santos is a mother of four who works long hours selling rice, flour and oil but still doesn’t have enough money to send her children to school every day.

Our sponsorship will involve a three year period of providing Elsa with training, start-up materials and financial support to start a local micro-business that she will be helped to plan and design so that it will be sustainable over the long term.

This fundraiser held special significance for our credit union as it was done in memory of Dr Harry Zaphir. Harry was the Deputy Chairman on our Board until his passing in September this year. He was a passionate supporter of the CUFA Village Entrepreneur Program and a fund has been set up in his name.

“It is easy to be overwhelmed by the need and poverty in the world. The Village Entrepreneur initiative is a specific way that one person or group of people can make a difference and that is how it is done – one person at a time, one village at a time.”
