Saving money is one of those things we all want to do well, but most of us struggle with.

In the pursuit of getting some saving tips, I turned to our Fans and Followers on Facebook and Twitter to see what everyday Aussies do to save money.

The result was a pretty good list of how you can save money everyday with little effort. Before we get into the tips, I would like to thank our Facebook Fans Mandy, Sandy, Rachael, Jacob, Simon and Shelley, as well as one of our Twitter Followers, Stefan, for their amazing tips!

Money saving tips

Cash tips

• Don’t carry cash around in your wallet!! You are less likely to spend it!!
• Use EFTPOS and not cash – it’s easier to track and watch where your budget is going;

Banking tips

• Open an interest saving account with your bank. Drop every penny you underspend on your budget in there;

Heading out?

• Take your own drinks and snacks when you go out. Saves spending a fortune on takeaway even though it tastes so good;
• I take a bottle of water with me everywhere. It saves me buying one when im out;
• Plan ahead before leaving the house for outings, and not just big days out, but even simple trips into town;
• Eating before I leave the house;
• Waiting a day or so and leave it for another day when I can accomplish more at once;

Shopping tips

• I like to really question my luxury purchasing. Is the item something I really want or am I caught in the moment? I always like to wait 24 hours after i see something I like, even the little things;
• I would say Shop on-line, but Mr. Harvey would hunt me down;
• Honestly, budget;
• Make one weekly shop, rather than several small ones. Every time we duck into the shops, we’re being exposed to a whole range of psychologically-designed tricks and traps;

Tips for Christmas time

• My mother-in-law saved heaps at Christmas with Presents because she bought everything on sale online. She never went and spent money on petrol in getting to the shops once;
• At Xmas to save having to buy too many presents, have one family member put the family names in a hat and which ever name you pull out you buy only for that person.

Conclusion

There are some really handy tips listed above for saving money, but as Mandy mentioned:

If there was a really good way to save money then we all would be saving money. I think its different for each household and what they do really.
