Buying in bulk is not a new concept, but it is one that is not utilized as effectively as it could by most people.

There are two main ways to buy in bulk – you can either buy the larger version of a particular product, like buying a 5kg bag of rice for example, or you can wait until a particular product is on sale and buy a lot of that item at once.

Either way saves you money.

Making room

Before you start buying in bulk it’s a good idea to create some room in your pantry, freezer and other cupboards for your bulk purchases. Items like toilet paper can really take up some room in cupboards, and meat when bought in bulk can fill your freezer up fast.

Items to buy in bulk

Below is a list of items you should either buy in large versions or look out for when they are on sale and buy in bulk.

Food items

Rice and pasta

Another great food to buy when it is on sale or in large packages. Once the packets are open make sure you store in air-tight containers.

Cooking oil

If you cook a lot you will find it handy and cheaper to have your favourite cooking oil on hand in bulk.

Coffee

Coffee lasts a long time, especially if you keep it in your fridge.

Soft drinks

As long as the bottles are not open, soft drinks lasts a long time. Just make sure you don’t consume more just because they are there.

Flour

If you bake a lot then buying your flour in bulk can save you even more money.

Meat

You can use your freezer much more effectively by buying meat in bulk and freezing dinner-sized portions.

Tin food

Most tin food will last a long time, and so it’s a great opportunity to buy those foods you eat a lot of. Especially more expensive tin foods like tuna and salmon.

Dried fruits and nuts

These can easily be bought in large packets or while on sale and broken up into daily portions or used in cooking. Once a packet is open make sure you store in an air-tight container.

Pet food

No matter if you are buying tin food versions or the dry biscuits, you can easily bulk buy pet food and store it for when you need it.

Nappies

Nappies can be expensive and you know you will be going through a lot of them, so why not buy in bulk?

Toilet paper

This is one thing that you can never have too much of. Wait for the supermarkets to have a great special and buy as much as you can.

Tissues

Like, toilet paper, tissues are a great item to buy in bulk.

Batteries

Another expensive product that rarely goes on sale. Watch out for a great deal and buy in bulk. Just make sure you are buying the correct sizes.

These non-perishable items can easily be bought in bulk and stored away for when they are needed.

Soap

Make sure you are clean and save at the same time.

Toothpaste / toothbrushes

These can be expensive, so make sure you buy in bulk when they are on sale.

Washing powder

As long as you keep the powder versions dry, washing powder can last a long time before you have to use it.

Light bulbs

It’s always a good idea to have spare light bulbs on hand.
