Customers are encouraged to donate to the CUFA Solomon Islands Appeal, which is raising much needed funds to assist those credit union and savings club members who have been devastated by the recent natural disaster.
Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless as the Solomon Islands were hit by heavy rains and flash flooding.
The death toll has been esitmated at 19 but is expected to rise as more than 40 people are still missing. In the capital Honiara, one-fifth of the population is seeking refuge in make-shift evacuation centres and a further 40,000 people are displaced across the country.
Early reports from the Solomon Islands Credit Union League (SICUL) and CUFA’s Pacific Partner, the Oceania Confederation of Credit Union Leagues (OCCUL), suggest that credit union and savings club infrastructure has sustained minimal damage. However, many members will have been gravely affected by this unprecedented natural disaster, most prominently in relation to their livelihood activities and long term hardship is expected.
Funds will be primarily used to help rebuild the livelihoods of those affected.
Donations can be made online on the CUFA website.
